第一类是普通集装箱活动室，又称干货集装箱，主要用于杂货的装卸。一般用于装运文化用品、日用百货、医药、纺织、工艺品、化工产品、五金交电、电子机械、仪器仪表、机械零部件等，占集装箱总数的70～80%。除了冷冻货物、活动植物外，从尺寸和重量上来说，适合集装箱运输的货物也可以使用干集装箱。
第二种是冷藏集装箱，其温度可从-60℃调节到+30℃。这种集装箱的前端装有制冷装置，在运输过程中通过连续供电使集装箱保持在规定的温度，就像“步行式冷冻机”。这种包装箱适用于夏季运输黄油、巧克力、冻鱼、炼乳、水果等物品。
第三种是开顶容器。这种容器没有顶部，但顶部由帆布、塑料布或塑料涂层布制成，并由可折叠顶梁支撑。可通过起重机从顶部装卸。装运时，用篷布盖住顶部，其水密要求与干式集装箱相同。适用于玻璃板材、钢材、机械等重型货物的装载。
第四种是平架集装箱，它没有顶部和两侧，其特点是从集装箱侧面装卸。超重货物是主要的运输工具，如车床、游艇、锅炉等裸装货物可免除外包装，可用于大型、超宽、超高货物的吊装。

It can be loaded and unloaded from the top by crane. When shipping, cover the top with tarpaulin, and its watertight requirement is the same as that of dry container. Suitable for loading glass plate, steel products, machinery and other heavy goods.
The fourth type is the flat rack container, which has no top and two sides, and is characterized by loading and unloading from the side of the container. Overweight cargo is the main carrier, such as lathe, yacht, boiler and other naked cargo which can be exempted from outer packaging, and can be used for large, ultra wide and ultra-high cargo hoisting.
